- The Dome of the Rock is where Muhammad is said to have ascended to heaven and is considered the holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. It also was built on the Temple Mount, which is a the holiest site for Jews, and is supposedly where the Third Temple is to stand with the coming of the Messiah. It's one of the most highly contested religious sites in the world.
